You will find an interesting series of books that deal with Irish and military history. Also, some fascinating history that has a mix of Irish and Jewish military history which will be very revealing.
My name is Donal Buckley and I now live in Co. Mayo in the West of Ireland. I am an historian (MA (Hist) NUIG) and former Irish Army Officer. History, especially military history, is a passion, especially the Irish involvement in WW1 and the Irish War of Independence. The period 1912 - 1922 was amazing during which the Irish Independence struggle interwove totally with the First World War. The War of Independence (1919-1921) achieved Ireland's exit from the UK after 120 years of enforced participation.
Having served overseas in a number of locations including in the Middle East, I also have a deep interest in Israel and when I heard that the ‘Founding Father’ of the Israeli Armoured Corps came from County Mayo my interest was heightened and the result was a short book ‘Sgt Flanagan, Foxford and Israel’.
Now to an area in which I had no knowledge (or interest). It was suggested to me that Freemasonry would have had a deep influence on Irish history and that I should write about it. That challenge produced two books ‘Freemasonry in Ireland. An Overview’ (temporarily out of print) and ‘Freemasonry Symbols in Ireland’ which is available.
Back to the Irish War of Independence. ‘The Battle of Tourmakeady’ is an evidence based account which deals an action which took place on 03 May 1921 when an RIC/ Black and Tan patrol was ambushed by a South Mayo Brigade column of the Old Irish Republican Army in order to destroy the patrol and cause the closure of an RIC Barracks in the nearby Derrypark. The Column later that day saw action with the Border Regiment and this is where the story merges fact with fiction. What really happened? This book is due to be reprinted and I will keep you up to date.
I hope you enjoy browsing this site and I will add to it from time to time, whether it is from my own pen or from my overflowing study that I am told I must reduce!
Books that are out of stock will be back in stock by July. Keep an eye out.
